Usein kuulee sanottavan “Olet sitä mitä syöt”, mutta ayurveda esittää asiaan uuden näkökulman: Olet sitä mitä sulatat. Näin ollen, oikeanlaisen ruuan syöminen ei yksin riitä kehon ravitsemiseksi , vaan keskeisessä asemassa on vahva ja oikein toimiva ruuansulatus. Jotta pystyisimme hyötymään syömästämme ruuasta, kehon täytyy ensin pilkkoa se elimistöllemme sopivaan muotoon. Ruuansulatuksen tuli, eli ayurvedan kielellä agni, on vastuussa sekä ruuan sulattamisesta, kehon lämpötilan säätelystä että aineenvaidhunnasta.Agni on tulielementin ilmentymä kehossa. Sen keskeisin vaikutusalue on ruuansulatus ja soluaineenvaihdunta. Vatsahapot ja ruuansulatusnesteet entsyymeineen ovat agnin ilmentymiä. Lisäksi agnin tehtävänä on pitää kehon lämpötila vakaana 37°C:n tuntumassa, ulkoisista olosuhteista ja syömämme ruoan lämpötilasta huolimatta.Lisäksi agni ilmenee myös aineenvaihduntana (metabolia) kehon kudoksissa ja solutasolla. Mielen tasolla agni tuottaa älykkyyden ja erottelukyvyn. Vahva agni antaa tahdonvoiman ja päättäväisyyden ja säätelee elinvoimaisuutta.

Heikko ruuansulatus aiheuttaa monenlaisia ongelmia. Turvotus, ilmavaivat tai liiallinen röyhtäily ovat yleisiä, ja johtuvat liian heikosta ruuansulatuksesta. Oireita heikosta ruuansulatuksesta ovat myös raskas, unelias olo ruokailun jälkeen, sekä liman erittyminen ja nenän tukkeutuminen pian aterian jälkeen.Mikäli ruuansulatuksesi on heikko ja kärsit helposti vatsan turvotuksesta, ilmavaivoista, röyhtäilystä, närästyksestä tai löysistä ulosteista, erityisesti silloin on tärkeää kiinnittää huomiota omiin ruokailutottumuksiinsa. On tärkeää ruokailla säännöllisesti, ja ainoastaan ruoka-aikaan. Vältä satunnaista syömistä vaihteleviin kellonaikoihin, jatkuvaa napostelua ja tarpeettomia välipaloja. Välin aterialta aterialle tulisi olla vähintään 4 tuntia. Tässä ajassa edellinen ateria on kokonaan sulatettu.Ruuansulatuksen ollessa heikko, on tärkeää syödä pehmeää, helposti sulavaa ruokaa – keittoja, puuromaisia ruokia, riisiruokia. Vältä leipää, pizzaa, juustoja ja raskaita ruokia, sekä raakoja ruokia, raasteita ja salaatteja. Syö vatsasi 75% täyteen ja vältä ylensyöntiä. Lisäksi käytä agnia lisääviä mausteita, kuten inkivääri, mustapippuri, kaneli ja neilikka, sekä ayurvedatuotteita ja ayurvedisiä kotirohtoja. Vältä stressaavia tai voimakkaita tunteita nostattavia tilanteita, sillä ne vaikuttavat heikentävästi agniin. Sen sijaan muista säännöllinen fyysinen harjoitus & jooga-asanat, sillä ne vahvistavat tehokkaasti agnia.
